The other day, we just needed to get out of the house for a bit. It was a beautiful day – especially for February in the PNW. We ran a couple of errands, and then decided to grab some lunch. Brad was craving Mexican, and I was hoping to try out somewhere new…. YELP to the rescue!
I found this little gem of a place – Pepper Box Cafe. The reviews looked promising (4.5 stars!), and it was right on the way to our next errand – win/win!
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but luckily we were able to sit inside with the stroller! Toting a baby around is a new experience for us, and we are still getting the hang of these things!
The inside is cute and quaint. The hostess/server greeted us and was very helpful when we told her that it was our first time in. I love when the staff is helpful and offers suggestions when they know it’s your first time coming in. She gave us a few recommendations, and we placed our order – one house-made chorizo burger with green chile cheese fries, and one order of huevos rancheros.
Our order came out in a timely manner, and OH MY those green chile fries are simply to die for!! The perfect amount of spice and flavor, I’m drooling now just thinking about them again!
We both enjoyed our meals – it was Mexican comfort food with a twist! While we were eating, two different regulars came and left. I got the feeling this place was still “underground” in the Portland food scene… no crazy long lines, but amazing quality food with lots of flavor at a price that won’t break your bank. It seems like places with all of those qualities are fleeting in this ever-growing, ever-changing city. It was comforting to find this place.. almost like we’d just been let in on a really good secret.
We finished up our lunch and got back to our day of errands, but we will definitely be back soon!
